A new MINDxAI Lab paper, “Mediation Analysis of Workload and Emotion on the Performance of Supervision Tasks,” was published online in the Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting on September 19, 2026. The study was authored by Moajjem Hossain Chowdhury, Shuoyang Wang, and Yunmei Liu.

Connecting Task Demands, Operator States, and Performance

Prior research has established individual links among task demands, operator states, and performance, but has rarely tested the full pathway connecting them. This study examines whether workload and emotion statistically mediate the relationship between task conditions and performance.

Using the open-source MOCAS dataset, the researchers analyzed 21 participants monitoring robot swarms across nine conditions that varied robot speed and camera count. A multilevel, multivariate mediation framework jointly modeled workload, arousal, and valence to estimate indirect associations with success rate, alongside the direct effects of task conditions that remained after accounting for these states.

What the Findings Mean for Adaptive Automation

Several task conditions showed significant total indirect effects, with valence—the pleasantness or unpleasantness of an emotional state—showing the most consistent mediator-specific role. Significant direct effects also remained, indicating that workload and emotion explained part, but not all, of the relationship between task conditions and performance.

These findings provide a quantitative foundation for state-aware adaptive automation. They suggest that assistance responsive to operator states should be complemented by interface support that also addresses task demands, such as prioritizing anomalies or filtering camera streams.

Congratulations to Moajjem Hossain Chowdhury for leading this work, and thanks to Shuoyang Wang for the collaboration!

Dr. Yunmei Liu is a co-author of “Cognitive Workload Assessment in Procedural Tasks,” published online in Human Factors on September 2, 2026. The collaborative paper is first-authored by Niosh Basnet.

Understanding Workload as Tasks Unfold

The study examined 30 participants completing cooking tasks under routine conditions and conditions involving disruptions and time pressure. Researchers combined self-reported workload with eye and skin-conductance measures to examine how demands changed during the tasks.

Individual disruptions could produce brief increases in workload, while accumulating anomalies could sustain higher demands. The physiological measures differed in their sensitivity, with blink rate providing a useful indicator in this task setting. These findings can inform assistance that responds to both immediate difficulties and the cumulative demands of procedural work.

Date and Time: Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 12:30 PM Eastern Time

About the Talk

As automated vehicles continue to advance, human-driven and automated vehicles are likely to coexist in mixed traffic for an extended period. Dr. Liu's talk presented three studies examining human responses in this evolving environment:

Situation awareness and automation: Changes in situation awareness across different levels of automation.

Surrounding automated-vehicle behavior: Driver responses to aggressive behaviors of surrounding automated vehicles.

Human internal states: The roles of cognitive workload and emotion in human performance.

Together, these studies highlighted the dynamic relationships among automation, surrounding traffic, and human internal states in mixed-traffic systems.

The MINDxAI Lab is excited to welcome two new Ph.D. students, Qunli Liu and Udit Kumar Das, as they begin the next stage of their academic journeys with our lab.

Welcoming Qunli Liu

Qunli holds an M.S. in Data Science from the University of California, Irvine and a B.A. in Data Science from the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include physiological signal analysis, behavioral data analysis, and statistical modeling. At MINDxAI, his work examines human operator performance in surveillance tasks and how environmental factors shape human activity and mobility behavior in urban environments. He also supports the lab’s smart manufacturing and rehabilitation robotics projects.

Welcoming Udit Kumar Das

Udit holds an M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Louisville, an M.S. in Applied Statistics and Data Science from Jahangirnagar University, and a B.S. in Petroleum and Mining Engineering from the Military Institute of Science and Technology in Bangladesh. His research focuses on human factors, driver behavior, cognitive workload, and human–AI interaction in transportation. His current work investigates how aggressive driving behaviors affect novice drivers’ visual attention, workload, and driving behavior in simulated driving environments. He leads the lab’s Human-Autonomy/AI Teaming project and supports the Aggressive Driving in Mixed Traffic project.

We hope Qunli and Udit will quickly settle into the new rhythm of Ph.D. life and feel at home in our lab community during the coming semester. We are excited to support their growth, learn from their perspectives, and see the ideas and contributions they will bring to MINDxAI Lab! We look forward to everything they will accomplish in the years ahead!

The supplement will support one undergraduate researcher during Summer and Fall 2026. The student will gain hands-on experience in human-centered AI, simulation-based experimentation, multimodal data processing, and transportation safety research while contributing to the continued development of the project’s experimental workflows.

The undergraduate researcher will primarily assist with developing and refining virtual driving scenarios that represent safety-critical conditions and preparing multimodal experimental datasets for downstream modeling. These activities will help strengthen the realism, quality, and efficiency of the project’s simulation and data-analysis pipelines.

Led by MINDxAI Lab PhD student Moajjem Hossain Chowdhury with Dr. Yunmei Liu, “Communication Barriers in Patient-Provider Interactions in Health Care: Scoping Review” is now available open access in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Beyond a List of Communication Barriers

Following PRISMA-ScR, the review searched four databases, screened 6,233 records, and synthesized 253 empirical studies. It integrates linguistic, cultural, psychological, and patient–provider mental-model barriers into one framework, showing how they overlap and relate to patient experience, healthcare access, clinical decision-making, and health outcomes.

The synthesis identifies important gaps, including limited research on psychological and mental-model barriers and a lack of real-time behavioral, nonverbal, and physiological indicators. These findings provide a foundation for future interventions and technology development: adaptive support requires understanding which barriers are present, how they interact, and how they can be recognized during clinical encounters.

The lab’s next phase will move from evidence synthesis to empirical data analysis, examining how these barriers, individually and jointly, are associated with healthcare experiences and outcomes.

The project will work with students, educators, parents, researchers, and technologists to help high school students explore modern manufacturing and related STEM career paths through an immersive, accessible learning environment.

During the planning phase, the team will examine student and educator needs, develop VR storyboards and interaction models, and define supportive AI mentor behaviors for feedback, reflection, and safety guidance. These activities will establish a foundation for a future FINDERS FOUNDRY Development proposal.
