Service & Outreach Dr. Yunmei Liu Mentors Undergraduate Research through the 2024 NSF REU Program
Wearable Sensing | Undergraduate Research Mentorship
During summer 2024, Dr. Yunmei Liu mentored Emily Montgomery, a University of Louisville undergraduate studying computer science, through the NSF REU Site in Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chain. The ten-week research experience was part of the program led by Dr. Faisal Aqlan under NSF Award No. 2244119.
From Signal Processing to a Final Report
Emily worked on Python-based processing and visualization of electromyography (EMG) signals and prepared a research poster. The work connected computing skills with questions about wearable sensing and human performance, giving her practice in organizing analysis code and communicating a research project.
On July 31, Emily submitted her final report following Dr. Liu's review and feedback. The summer mentorship supported both technical development and the process of turning research work into a clear written account.
Alongside individual projects, the REU program offers workshops, research presentations, and industry visits to connect research with professional practice.
Aqlan Lab's public 2024 project description, Fatigue Monitoring in Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chain Using Wearable Technology, identifies Dr. Liu as the faculty supervisor and outlines research on wearable EMG and forearm muscle fatigue.
